(1) Parti libéral (droite libérale). Fondé en 1846, il prit le nom de Parti de la liberté et du progrès en 1961 et fut subdivisé entre le Parti réformateur libéral (Wallonie: fondé en 1979 à la suite de la fusion du Parti pour les réformes et la liberté en Wallonie et du Rassemblement wallon), le Front démocratique des Francophone (Bruxelles: fondé en 1970) et Vlaamse Liberalen en Democraten (Flandre: fondé en 1972).
(2) Parti catholique (droite démocrate-chrétienne et conservatrice): prit le nom de Parti social-chrétien à la fin de 1945 et subdivisé en 1968 en Parti social-chrétien (PSC: Wallonie) et Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP: Flandre).
(3) Parti socialiste (gauche socio-démocrate): fondé en 1885 sous le nom de Parti ouvrier belge, il prit le nom de Parti socialiste belge en 1945 et fut subdivisé en 1970 entre le Parti socialiste (PS: Wallonie) et le Socialistische Partij (SP: Flandre).
